Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1968, Gathorne-Hardy was brought up in Suffolk in the UK. He trained originally as a zoologist at Oxford University before retraining as an artist. At first self taught, he later attended life drawing and painting classes with Maggi Hambling at Morley College in London. He works as an artist, farmer, conservationist and curator. As an artist, his passion is life drawing and landscape drawing. Recurrent themes in his life drawings are seagulls and livestock, whilst is landscape work incorporates natural earth pigments and plant materials. He was the creator of The Alde Valley Spring Festival, a large seasonal celebration of the visual arts, rural writing and heritage crafts in East Suffolk and now hosts land-based arts residencies with his partner and young family.
