Emma, who is largely self-taught, is one of Britain's leading botanical painters, now a painter who gardens rather than a gardener who paints. Her flower, fruit and vegetable watercolours on Japanese rice paper combine botanical accuracy with a free and lively line. Her 'Plants for Connoisseurs' exhibition (London, 2023) celebrated 75 years of painting and gardening. Collectors worldwide have also enjoyed shows in New York and Japan. '... the paintings are careful, made with curiosity, intensity and love'. (David Gentleman)

This gean, or wild cherry, grows all over Britain and is common in the Scottish Borders where Emma lives. It is beautiful when in flower in early summer, and again in autumn, when the leaves turn various shades of red, pink and yellow. The wood is beautiful too, and is used for cabinet making and parts of musical instruments.
