A RARE CHINESE CELADON JADE FIGURE OF LI TAIBO
17TH CENTURY
The drunken, sleeping poet lying against a wine jar, wearing long robes and a scholar's cap, his face with a serene expression and with a long incised beard, the stone with light mottling and areas of russet skin to the reverse, 7.5cm.
From the Portersfield Collection, London, purchased from Roger Keverne Ltd 17th June 2008, Summer Exhibition, item 71.

Li Taibo (701-62) was a celebrated Tang poet who was known for his drinking and was often depicted with a wine pot. It is said that whilst died when he drunkenly tried to embrace the moon's reflection in a river and drowned.
