A RARE CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADON 'FUNERARY' JAR AND COVER
SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY
The body carved with overlapping upright leaves, applied with a large tiger with incised stripes coiled around the shoulder facing a recumbent lamb, the shallow domed cover surmounted by a bird finial, covered overall with a sea-green glaze, 26.4cm. (2)
From an English private collection, Dorset, purchased from Bonhams London, 10th November 2016, lot 42, a copy of the invoice is available.
Funerary jars such as this would have originally been made in pairs; one bearing the 'Green Dragon of the East' and the other with 'The White Tiger of the West'. See The British Museum, accession no. PDF.204 for a pair of related jars from The Percival David Collection. Refer also to the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 34.113.4a,b for another similar jar.
