A HARLEQUIN SET OF SIX YEW AND ELM LOWBACK WINDSOR CHAIRS

each with a splat back pierced with Gothic quatrefoils above a saddle seat on turned front legs united by crinoline stretcher, two stamped, one 'AMOS' the other 'AMOS GRANTHAM', comprising: a pair of armchairs and four side chairs (6)
Catalogue Note
The Amos family of Little Gonerby, nearby Grantham in Lincolnshire, were among the region's finest makers of early 19th century Windsor chairs. The family worked within the Grantham tradition but witjh a refined touch, their chairs are known for their slender turnings, elegant proportions and the characteristic use of yew with elm seats. The family's output spans a period of stylistic change with early examples featuring naturally curved branch under-arm supports, while later pieces adopt the finely turned supports that became fashionable in the 1820s. Surviving Amos chairs are valued today for their craftsmanship, lightness and distincitve Lincolnshire character.
