George III commemorative silver vinaigrette,
by Lea and Co, Birmingham 1817,
rectangular form, the cover with a bust of Princess Charlotte, surrounded by a floral border, engine-turned base, the silver-gilt interior with a pierced and engraved grille with an urn and a weeping willow, length 3.5cm, approx. weight 0.9oz.
Provenance: A Private Collection.
Princess Charlotte (1796-1817) was the only child of George Prince of Wales (later George IV), and Caroline of Brunswick. She was expected to ascend the British throne after the deaths of her grandfather, George III, and her father, but died in childbirth on the 6th November 1817, at the age of 21, predeceasing them both.
