Description
A Commonwealth silver wine cup,
maker's mark of CS with an arrow between, probably by Christopher Shaw, no date letter, but with Leopard's head struck twice, London circa 1655-60,
tapering lobed hexafoil bowl, on a raised circular foot, with lobed decoration, prick-dot initialled 'E.B' over 'E.W' over 'I', the underside with an old museum loan number, height 8.6cm, approx. weight 2.6oz.
Provenance: A Private Collection.
Listed in collection inventory as purchased from Bruford, April 1935.
For maker's mark see Mitchell, D., Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London, Their Lives and Marks, The Boydell Press, 2017, page 261/262. The normal mark for this maker is CS with a sword in between. The arrow in between is thought to be a variation on the mark.
