A RARE TIBETAN GILT-COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA
PROBABLY 16TH CENTURY
The bodhisattva raised on a double-lotus throne and seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, flanked by two lotus stems, the left hand held in vitarka mudra while the right is outstretched in varada mudra, wearing a dhoti, armlets and a diadem, the hair fashioned into a high chignon and adorned with a figure of Amitabha Buddha, the face with traces of cold-painted pigment, the base sealed, 4.3kg, 26.7cm.
From a European private collection, purchased from Benny Rustenberg in the 1980s.
