A CHINESE TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE TIBETAN-STYLE ALTAR VASE, BENBAPING
SIX-CHARACTER JIAQING SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1796-1820

The spherical body finely painted with the Eight Buddhist emblems and scrolling lotus, raised on a splayed foot decorated with lappets and surmounted by a conical neck painted with colourful vertical bands, with a further band of blue dots on a pink ground around the mouth, all divided by gilt borders, 26.5cm.

Formerly the collection of a Noble Italian Consul based in China during the period 1907-31.

The form of this vase was used during rituals to hold Sacred Plants and are related to ewers containing Sacred Water for ritual washing. The colourful banding seen on the neck of the vase offered here has been painted to resemble banners hung in Buddhist temples. An example of this type is illustrated in R. Kerr, Chinese Ceramics - Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, p.115, no.101.
