Description

A JAPANESE WOOD OKIMONO BY CHIKUSEN AND A NETSUKE
MEIJI ERA, 19TH/20TH CENTURY

The okimono realistically carved with three figures, one an old woman attacking a younger one with a knife while a girl peacefully sleeps beside them, the base signed Chikusen; together with a netsuke of Fukurokuju and a deer, signed, 5.7cm and 3.4cm. (2)

WITHOUT RESERVE

The okimono depicts the story of the Hag of Adachigahara, a tragic tale of a woman driven to cannibalistic madness by a dark obsession. The scene portrays the horrific moment the hag prepares to kill a pregnant traveller, unaware that the peacefully sleeping victim beside them is actually her own long-lost daughter.
