A LARGE JAPANESE HINOKI (CYPRESS) TRAY FROM NARA'S HŌRYŪ-JI TEMPLE
SHŌWA ERA, DATED 1981

The wooden cross-section slab taken from a pillar, with a rectangular heat-stamped mark reading as Hōryū-ji kozai zo (made with the old material of the Hōryūji temple), in a tomobako (wood box) inscribed Hōryū-ji Dai-kodo Kozan Suiban (from the Great Lecture Hall, a tray made from ancient wood), dated Shōwa 56 (1981), and signed Ryogen; 65cm.
