Description

TŌKŌ SHINODA(1913-2021)
EVOLUTION
SHŌWA, 1985

A Japanese lithograph, ink and colour on paper, signed Toko Shinoda, titled EVOLUTION, and numbered 21/35 in pencil to the lower margin; framed and glazed, the picture 53cm x 71 cm, 62cm x 81cm overall.

Following years of traditional calligraphy training under her father, Shinoda transitioned toward a personal, idiosyncratic style of abstract expressionism by deconstructing Japanese characters. After debuting her first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1936, she relocated to the United States and immersed herself in the vibrant New York art scene alongside figures like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.Today, her works are held in prestigious collections around the world, including the MET Museum, the British Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
