Description

A small collection of medals to interesting Naval recipients, comprising: a 1914-15 Star to Able Seaman Gordon Alexander Samuel Goodfellow, who served in H.M.S. Lion at the Battle of Jutland (J. 3671, G. A. S. GOODFELLOW, A.B, R.N.), near very fine; a 1914-15 Star to Stoker 1st Class Robert Brown, who died with Lord Kitchener and all hands in the sinking of H.M.S. Hampshire (K. 24050. R. BROWN. STO. 1. , R.N.), very fine; and a pair to John Thomas, Merchant Navy: British War Medal 1914-20 and Mercantile Marine War Medal (JOHN THOMAS), ribbons reversed, very fine. [4]

H.M.S. Lion was the flagship of Vice-Admiral David Beatty at the Battle of Jutland, May-June 1916, where she was hotly engaged and suffered considerable damage. Goodfellow served in her from January 1915 until the end of the war. There appear to have been fourteen men named John Thomas who were entitled to this pair of medals, of whom five lost their lives during the war.
