A small collection of medals and coins, including: The London Society for the Protection of the Metal Trade, a silver medal by William Turnpenny, 57 mm, dockside scene with the allegorical figure of Justice and a seated female holding a caduceus and greeting a tradesman, ex. 'REWARD FOR FIDELITY', rev. text in seven lines within a wreath, edge engraved 'TO GEO. MAJOR . 2. DEC. 1828. FOR DETECTING ISAAC FRYETT. IN ROBBING MR. COLWELL', some bruising and wear but good very fine; together with a family pair of Birmingham Assay Office silver long service medals (George Chance 1878-1903 and John Chance 1894-19), 44 mm, in fitted case; and other items. At the Old Bailey, on the 11th of September 1828, Isaac Fryett was tried on the charge of having stolen various tools and other metalware from his master, an ironmonger named Edward Colwell, the previous month. George Major, evidently also an employee of Mr Colwell's, appears only once in the court records, when he states that he had placed identifying marks on some of the stolen items. Fryett was convicted and sentenced to transportation for fourteen years.
