Catalogue Notes:

The design of this lot derives from the ancient Egyptian three-legged ‘Thebes’ stool, now in the collection of the British Museum and dating from 1550–1300 B.C. The design was first adapted by Liberty & Co., who retailed versions of both three- and four-legged stools from 1884. These remained available in their London showrooms until 1907 and were also retailed by Samuel Bing in Paris. Adolf Loos first employed the design in his apartment in 1903, and his fondness for the form is evident in its repeated use in his commissions.
