Catalogue Note

James Mackillop (1786–1870) was a Scottish-born East India merchant, Tory politician and prominent figure in the Anglo-Indian mercantile community. Born at St Ninians, Stirlingshire, the son of farmer John Mackillop and Mary Downie, he travelled to Calcutta and established his career in the East India trade, becoming a partner in the influential mercantile house Cruttenden, Mackillop & Co. He subsequently maintained business interests in London and India and was closely involved in commercial affairs between Britain and the East. Mackillop was elected Tory MP for Tregony, Cornwall, in 1830, representing the borough until its abolition under the Reform Act of 1832. He was a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and an early member of the Royal Geographical Society, reflecting his longstanding connections with India and interest in the wider region. He never married and died at Nice, France, in 1870, aged 83.
