Description
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CHINESE ZHUHUANG (BAMBOO VENEER) ARCHAISTIC VASE AND COVER, FANGHU
QIANLONG 1736-95
The rectangular body crisply carved to the shoulder with taotie masks and pendent lappets, the cover with a tall spade-shaped knop above a band of key fret, with a second band above the foot, the handles suspending loose rings and a link chain for suspension, together with a silk stand, 54cm. (3)
Provenance: from the collection of Dr John William Hawksley Grice OBE (1891–1976) and thence by descent. Formerly on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Grice loan number 17.
Zhuhuang (literally 'bamboo yellow', but meaning bamboo veneer) seems to have been developed in the Beijing Palace some time during the latter part of the Qianlong period, and remained popular into the early nineteenth century. It seems to have been inspired by furniture decoration of a type commonly found in the Beijing Palace with veneers of either the same or different woods, carved and applied to flat surfaces.
