Description

A CHINESE BAMBOO CARVING OF A BUDDHIST LION AND CUB
18TH CENTURY

The recumbent beast with an open mouth and curled mane, with its bushy tail raised and turning back towards the cub at its side, 33cm.

Provenance: from the collection of Dr John William Hawksley Grice OBE (1891–1976) and thence by descent.

The representation of a larger and a smaller Buddhist lion,
dashi xiaoshi, forms the pun taishi shaoshi, understood as the auspicious wish 'May you and your descendant achieve high rank'.
