Description

A rare Chelsea model of Hercules slaying the Lernaean Hydra, assisted by his nephew, Iolaus, who seals the neck stumps with a red hot brand, the bocage hung with the golden apples of the Hesperides, raised on a scrolled base, gold anchor mark. Damages and restoration. c.1760-65, 35cm. Cf. A similar model is in the Bearsted Collection at Upton House, Warwickshire. This is discussed in Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, p.166.
