Naval/maritime interest (East India Company): a George III three piece tea set of squat circular form with gadrooned rims and collet feet, the teapot with an heraldic crest finial, inscribed 'Presented to Sir Home Popham K.M by the Hon.ble the Court of Directors of the East India Company 1803' ** by Robert & Samuel Hennell, London 1803, 37.5oz weighable silver. (4) Sold with a copy of Popham, H: A Damned Cunning Fellow - The Eventful Life of Rear Admiral Sir Home Popham KLB, KCH, KM, FRS 1762-1820, (published 1991). **Sir Home Riggs Popham was a British Admiral who saw service during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He is remembered amongst other things for his scientific accomplishments, particularly the development of a signal code that was adopted by the Royal Navy in 1803 (most famously used for the signal 'England expects that every man will do his duty').
