Description
A mid 17th century pierced counter box, with a portrait of King Charles I on the cover*, engraved mythical beasts and scrollwork around the sides and finely engraved allegorical scene on the base; a putto blowing bubbles from a shell dish whilst leaping over an hourglass, flanked by a death mask and the inscription 'OMNIA VANITAS QUI EUADIT', unmarked c.1650, 1in (2.5cm) high, 0.5oz. *Facing left, lovelock on left shoulder, falling lace collar, armour and scarf across breast, ornamental open-work border around (reference - Medallic Illustrations, Vol.1, p.383, no.287).
