A FINE JAPANESE LACQUER BUNKO AND COVER

C.1850

The document box of rectangular form, the lid, sides and inside tray decorated with a panoramic landscape illustrating the Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi (the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road), with travellers making their way through mountains, bridges, and temples amongst clouds, the patterns in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi and kirikane on a hirame sakiji ground, the name of the stations inscribed in rectangular gold cartouches, unsigned, 13cm x 19.5cm x 23.7cm.
