A rare Chinese cast bronze scholar's table screen 17th/18th century, depicting numerous figures with pine sprays, cloud scrolls, a crane and a deer and other auspicious things above a reticulated fence with lotus and a turtle below, with a hardwood stand, the screen 24cm x 26.5cm, 35.5cm overall. Provenance: the Gerald Mere collection, Redhill, formed in the 1920s. Purchased from Christie, Manson & Woods, 6th December 1932, lot 78.
This screen depicts the famous meeting of literati at the Orchid Pavilion, Lan Ting Wen Hui, in the year 353 AD.
