A Cricket Success Story
21 Sep, 2009
Woolley and
Wallis have continued a successful cricketing summer, where
England's
eleven have floundered, selling a Summers Brown and Sons Ltd Force
XXXX bat for £2,200.
The bat was used
by Sir Jack Hobbs in the 1924/25 Ashes series against Australia. It
was signed by both teams and had an inscription that read, "I used
this bat whilst scoring my 7th and 9th test
centuries inEngland vsAustralia matches, 115 Sydney Dec 1924,
119Adelaide Jan 1925, Jack Hobbs". The bat's connection toEngland's
most prolific batsman saw significant pre-sale interest, and there
were bids on the phone from several private collectors, taking the
hammer price to well over the top estimate of £1,200.
Sir Jack Hobbs
was not only the first professional cricketer to be knighted, he
was also the only Englishman selected as one of Wisden's five
Cricketers of the 20th Century.
