A Continental faïence drug jar 1st half 18th century
A Continental faïence drug jar 1st half 18th century, Belgium or Northern France, the cylindrical body painted in blue with the inscription 'U. RESUMPTIU' within a crowned cartouche flanked by term figures holding flowers, some glaze chipping to the rim, 18.5cm.
Cf. Rudolf E A Drey, Apothecary Jars, p.121, pl.62B for a similar jar. The ingredients of this restorative ointment include oil of violets, oil of sweet almonds and fenugreek seeds. It was used in the treatment of asthma and pleurisy.
