This work was painted in 1935 and represented a new direction for the artist. He had started to take an interest in the coast with his views painted at Rye in the early 1930s but in this composition his work becomes more surreal, with the strong shadows giving the found objects a monumental, even sculptural stature. Nash planned to include this work in what later became the memorial volume and returned to this theme on a number of occasions
