A pair of Derby figures of a shepherd and his companion c.1810
A pair of Derby figures of a shepherd and his companion c.1810, he standing beside and leaning on a tree stump, playing the flute to his beloved, a sheep recumbent at his feet, she raising her left hand to her lips, both raised on reticulated scroll circular bases, incised No. 369, crowned crossed batons and D marks in red and light brown, 26cm. The shepherd derives from a 16th century Florentine bronze sculpture of a nude youth, which in turn followed a Roman marble inspired by a 4th century Hellenistic bronze.
