£500 - £800 £500

A large Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish 1st half 18th century, later-enamelled in Holland with the Three Friends of Winter, pine, prunus and bamboo, issuing from a banded hedge while birds fly above, 39cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 769. Purchased from James Norbury, January 2000.

Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.83, pl.14.

Cf. Soame Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain, pl.77A for the original Japanese Kakiemon design, which omits the three birds in flight. The European decoration is very close to the original design.
