In 1934 Harrod's held a selling exhibition, Modern Art for the Table, part of a government campaign to link artists to industrial design of glass and ceramics. Clarice Cliff was appointed as an Artistic director, with twenty eight recognised contemporary artists invited to design for Wilkinson's, E Brain & Co (Foley) and Stuart glass. The list of artists included Dame Laura Knight, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, John Armstrong and Duncan Grant.
