'The Sluggard' a bronze sculpture by Frederick Lord Leighton, published by Leslie Arthur Collie May 1st 1890 signed in the bronze, impressed foundry mark 53cm. high Provenance William Spindler, thence by descent William Spindler (artist 1866-1940), exhibited his work four times at the Royal Academy between 1892 and 1896 and is known for his portraits including one of Sarah Bernhardt. This version of The Sluggard is the reduced version of the 1886 figure exhibited at the Royal Academy. The bronze was also exhibited at the 1890 Arts and Crafts exhibition.
