An unusual Martin brothers stoneware vase covered in a blue glaze, incised with finches and butterflies amongst iris and wild flowers incised 1-1898 Martin Bros, London & Southall, professionally restored neck 33cm. high Judy Rudoe Decorative Arts 1850-1950 a Catalogue of the British Museum Collection British Museum Press, page 75 catalogue number 184 for a similar vase with the same date bequeathed from the Hull-Grundy collection. The British Museum describes this technique 'with its true sgraffito decoration seems to be unparalleled in Martinware production. Its inspiration lies in Chinese reserve decorated blue and white wares of the 15th Century'
