Nine Nepal ghurras wood
Nine Nepal ghurras
wood, in varying designs, three with zoomorphic finials,
39cm the longest,
and a Nepal staff finial, carved as a tower, on a stand. (11)
Provenance
Seward Kennedy, London.
The ghurra has become a deeply symbolic object to the mountain people of Nepal. From the simple function of supporting the churn rod whilst making butter, the traditional rope has evolved into these small wooden sculptures with abstract geometric elements evoking the gods of the Hindu pantheon.
