A pair of West African dagger handle mounts
A pair of West African dagger handle mounts
late 19th / early 20th century
leather with line cut straps, previously with sable antelope horns,
29.5cm and 32cm long. (2)
With a handwritten note - These two pieces of leather were sewn over the ends of the two horns of the Sabre Antelope which I have mounted on shield, and the horns were sent to England from W. Africa in this condition. It would seem that they had been used as swords by the natives. A.T.H. 1915.
Provenance
Arthur Tindell Hopwood.
