A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN RECTANGULAR 'CRANE AND DEER' PLAQUE

20TH CENTURY

Painted with a pair of spotted deer in a rocky setting amidst peony and aster blooms, with a lone crane perched on a leafy branch above, with an inscription describing the crane and deer together in spring, dated the wushen year and with a signature reading Xu Dasheng, 43.5cm x 29.7cm.

The image of a crane, he, and deer, lu, together forms the rebus liuhe tongchun, which signifies the universe enjoying springtime and, by implication, prosperity and longevity.
