The Helen Espir Collection - 12 Nov 2014

A Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish 1st half 18th century

£1,000 - £1,500

A Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish 1st half 18th century, originally with a band of floral anhua decoration between narrow hatched borders of underglaze blue, later-enamelled with hunting scenes divided by tall tree trunks, a further hunt to the central well, 22cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 605. Purchased from Jonathan Bennet, May 1997.

Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.185.

The decoration appears to derive from a series of hunting prints by Antonio Tempesta, published in Amsterdam in 1631 and very much of the historicist manner. Cf. Christie's, Amsterdam, 23rd May 2006, lot 285, also Bonhams, The Watney Collection of Chinese Porcelain decorated in Holland and England, 7th November 2003, lot 39 for similar examples.
