A good Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish early 18th century

£1,500 - £2,000 £1,600

A good Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated saucer dish early 18th century, originally left in the white, later-enamelled in Holland with a Dutch yacht identifiable by the rig and the lee board, at sail on choppy turquoise waters, flying the Dutch flag with the arms of Amsterdam, further smaller flags from the mainsail and other masts, two further ships in the distance, the rim with a panelled border of flowers in red, green, black and gilt, 21cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 909. Purchased from Jorge Welsh, January 2007.

This scene is only ever seen on saucer dishes, with some variations to the decoration of the rim and also to the arms of the central ship. One is illustrated in European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.182, pl.33. See also D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain - Chine de Commande, fig. 355 and p. 230 for similar dishes in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. Also, D. S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, p. 61, no. 36.
