A large Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated charger Kangxi 1662-1722
A large Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated charger Kangxi 1662-1722, later-enamelled in Holland in the Kakiemon manner with a boy on a buffalo beneath a large grasshopper on a millet spray, a cockerel and hen scratching the ground, within a boldly decorated rim with panels of quail and phoenix on a colourful diaper ground, 39cm.
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 721. Purchased from Geoffrey Waters, May 1999.
Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.95, pl.29.
While the elements of the design have all been copied from Oriental originals, the composition is entirely European, with elements of known Kakiemon, famille verte and blue and white patterns combined on one large dish.
