A Chinese porcelain English-decorated teabowl Kangxi 1662-1722
A Chinese porcelain English-decorated teabowl Kangxi 1662-1722, originally glazed in a café au lait ground, the interior with a simple ruyi spray in underglaze blue and with a hatched border to the rim, the exterior later-enamelled with stylized flowers issuing from vases, in thick white, red and green enamels, 8.5cm.
Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 319. Purchased from Mentmore Antiques Fair, April 1994.
Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.206, pl.1.
The enamelling is likely to have taken place in London in the early 18th century. Two similarly decorated bowls are in the collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum (Accession nos. 163-1913 and 28-1958).
