A fine and rare pair of large Chinese caparisoned cloisonné elephants Jiaqing 1796-1820, each standing four-square, its head turned slightly with a curling trunk, the wrinkled skin depicted with linear cloisons on a white ground, each pachyderm supporting a wide, elaborate saddle carpet on its back, decorated with cranes and pavilions amidst cloud scrolls above crashing waves, upon which a large beribboned gourd-shaped vase rests, the saddle and vase with a scrolling foliate lotus design bordered by cobalt-blue key fret, all reserved on a turquoise ground, 31cm high. (2)

Provenance: Sir James Haldane Stewart Lockhart KCMG (1858-1937), and thence by descent. Collected in China c.1900.

來源: 詹姆斯·哈德納·斯圖爾特·羅卡特(1858-1937)家族收藏,1900年代從中國獲得。

      詹姆斯·哈德納·斯圖爾特·羅卡特(1858-1937)出生於英國蘇格蘭,1878年開始成為香港殖民地的候補軍官成員之一。經過多年的努力,在1902年他晉升為英國駐威海衛(今山東威海市)專員,在香港及威海衛的工作期間他對中國藝術品產生了濃厚的興趣,他收藏的部分書畫和錢幣如今在蘇格蘭國家博物館展出。他退役回到倫敦之後被倫敦大學亞非學院聘請為榮譽講師,并參與策劃了1935年的倫敦中國藝術品展。
