A good Chinese red cinnabar lacquer bowl 16th century, finely carved with four birds amidst flowering peony, hibiscus and magnolia, the interior plain, the rim and foot formed from a double band, 12.7cm. Cf. Carved Lacquer in the Collection of the Palace Museum, nos.254 and 255 for related examples.
