λ A PAIR OF SMALL JAPANESE SHIBAYAMA VASES

MEIJI 1868-1912

The slender bodies in ivory and silver decorated with mother of pearl inlays with birds amongst flowering branches, the necks and feet applied with floral motifs in cloisonné enamels, both signed Tomonobu, together with a pair of patinated bronze vases decorated with onagadori cockerels perched on prunus branches, each signed Koshu koku (made by Koshu), 18.2cm max. (4)

Provenance: a private English collection, the two Shibayama vases purchased from Sotheby's, 28th July 1971, lot 209, and the bronze vases from Sotheby's, 25th April 1990, lot 1818.
