A COLLECTION OF SEVEN JAPANESE LACQUER BOXES AND COVERS
EDO AND MEIJI, 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY

All embellished with gold and black lacquer, some used as kogo (incense boxes); one formed as a takarabune (treasure ship) laden with auspicious objects; another with two beauties mending clothes; the third with a shaped panel enclosing flowers, signed Ittosai in red lacquer; another a natsume (tea caddy) with flowers and scrolling tendrils; the fifth of quatrefoil shape and embellished with flowerheads and pine needles, with mother of pearl inlays; the sixth a square-section box and cover painted with prunus, bamboo and pine, and the last a three-case cylindrical box with cover, decorated with ferns, 13.4cm max.
