YORYO KANNON (KANNON OF THE WILLOW)
EDO PERIOD, DATED 1857
A Japanese kakemono (hanging scroll painting), ink, colour and gold on paper, depicting a serene-looking Kannon wearing long flowing robes, an ornate necklace and elaborate headdress; the Goddess of Mercy is sitting on a rock before a tall waterfall, the water meandering below; a vase with a bamboo sprig standing in a dish to her left, and a tripod incense burner to her right; with two lines of calligraphy reading Ansei yon hinoto mi natsu go chushi hi, Sessen Tsukioka Kiyoshi (Ketsu) kaori ni moku shi ogami utsusu (Painted by Tsukioka Sessen, artist name Kiyoshi/Ketsu, bathed in an incense fragrance, in the middle of the fifth month, during the summer, in the year of hinoto-mi, Ansei 4th year -1857), and with two red seal marks, 126.5cm x 53cm.
