A CHINESE BAMBOO WRIST REST SIGNED BY ZHAO HAN

LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY

Inscribed with a li-shu poetic inscription after the Six Dynasties original entitled 'In Praise of the Kingfisher', 36.5cm.

Chao Han was a graduate of the Wanli period of the late Ming dynasty. Over a period of more than thirty years he amassed a large collection of stele inscriptions, taken from stone carvings in ancient locations. It is likely this carving is taken from his writing after one of these inscriptions.

Cf. S L Moss, In Scholar's Taste, no.47, where this wrist rest is illustrated.
