A RARE CHINESE BAMBOO ROOT STAFF CARVED BY JIN SHIHENG

LATE 19TH CENTURY

Carved in shallow relief with a fruiting vine and a cartouche with the mark shiheng hui dao, together with a pair of duilian, also by this artist, each with a seal mark, fitted boxes, 95cm and 135cm x 15cm respectively. (3)

Jin Shiheng was a student of Qu Ziyi during the late Qing dynasty. He was a scholar, and a renowned Yixing potter. In Guangxu's third year he travelled to Japan to teach the art of Yixing pottery. His Yixing pottery has always been in high demand both in Japan and China.

金士恒為清光緒年間宜興紫砂名匠,江蘇彭城(今江蘇省徐州)人,師承瞿子冶,于光緒三年(1877)應邀赴日,為傳授日本匠人製陶技法,其旅日期間作品深受追捧,供不應求,大多傳世于日本。金士恒生平與創作活動,及紫砂技藝史不為人所聞,因其東渡日本傳授紫砂技藝一事于上世紀80年代為日本人所發覺并發表開展相關研究,始漸偉人所知悉。
