A Chinese armorial sauceboat c.1740, decorated to the interior with the arms of Wemyss, Earl of Wemyss, the fluted sides delicately enamelled with flowering branches in gilt and sepia tones, 18.5cm. Provenance: the Phil Cooke Collection. The Robert Doyle Collection, sold Christie's, New York, 23rd January 2001, lot 157. The Clifford Henderson collection. Illustrated: D S Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p.143. This service was made for James, 5th Earl of Wemyss, whose eldest son joined Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 uprising and later fled to France.
