A Chinese blue silk robe 19th / 20th century, richly embroidered with the eight Daoist Immortals, the eight trigrams, shou characters, bats and other auspicious symbols above a border of dragons amidst breaking waves, some staining and wear, 133cm long.
Provenance: an English private collection.
The symbols on this robe indicate that it was probably made for a Daoist priest. The inclusion of sleeves is an unusual feature as they go against the Daoist principle of minimal cutting of the fabric.
