The Fine Chinese Paintings & Works of Art sale on 1st July 2020 will feature a pair of large and impressive lapis lazuli models of elephants from the collection of the Rothschild Family (lot 112). The elephants were in the collection of Lionel de Rothschild (1882-1942) at his estate Exbury House in Hampshire. They were subsequently passed by descent to his son Edmund and are now being sold on behalf of the Trustees of Exbury House.

We will also be offering 38 lots from an important British private collection, including an unusual large Transitional baluster vase and cover (lot 45) and a rare Imperial cinnabar lacquer ‘dragon’ cabinet from the Qianlong period (lot 46) .

Highlights from the Paintings section of the sale include a scroll painting by Zhang Daqian presented to his friend James Kedzie Penfield (lot 15) and a landscape painting by Pu Ru depicting a scholar gazing at a waterfall (lot 29). The painting by Pu Ru was purchased at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 1990 by the famous collector and entrepreneur T. T. Tsui, who gave this painting directly to its current owner.
