Fine Asian Art

Tuesday 19th May 2026. Starts at 10:00am

This May, we are delighted to present two rare and inscribed gilt-copper alloy figures from the collection of Gerard Leslie Makins Clauson (1891–1974), depicting the Fifth Panchen Lama, Lobsang Yeshe (1663–1737), and the Confession Buddha, Candanashri.

Sir Gerard was an English civil servant, businessman, and a renowned Orientalist, best known for his pioneering studies of the Turkic languages.

Other highlights include a collection of 18th-century Chinese vases formerly in the collection of Alfred Morrison (1821–1897) of Fonthill House; a Chinese turquoise-ground famille rose Tibetan-style altar vase (benpaping), formerly in the collection of a noble Italian consul based in China between 1907 and 1931; and a finely carved Chinese white jade ‘Red Cliff’ boulder, formerly in the collection of Quincy Chuang.

Highlights of the sales will be displayed at our Mayfair office in May. Please contact the department at AsianArt@woolleys.live for more information.
