A Japanese lacquer writing box and cover, suzuribako Edo 1615-1868, the cover decorated in hiramaki-e with chrysanthemum, phoenix, and scrolling foliage on a roiro ground, the interior in nashiji and fitted with three trays, one holding the suzuri and a silvered metal mizuire, with writing implements and two further ink stones, a black lacquer tomobako, unsigned, 4.7cm x 22.3cm x 24.7cm.
